Anderson: Character in squad clear to see from Gillingham draw

28 April 2024

Tom Anderson believes the manner of the final day draw at Gillingham is a perfect reflection of the character of the Rovers squad as they secured a play-off place.

Rovers needed to dig in for the final half hour after seeing Thimothée Lo-Tutala sent off and hosts Gillingham come back from two goals down.

Anderson believes the grit and determination on show at the Priestfield Stadium is what Rovers are all about - and that has been a major factor in carrying them to a top seven finish.

“We started off pretty well, got the two goal and lead and then what happened happens - that’s football,” Anderson said. “They got the two goals and I think we rallied really well.

“That shows the character of the team. We dug in with clearances and blocks on the line in the last minute.

“That’s what it takes to get into the play-offs. We’ve done it now and we’ll settle ourselves down and go again.

“The word character is massive in football and we showed loads of it. That’s what it takes to get into the play-offs.

“You have to keep doing it every minute, whatever it takes and that’s what it takes.”

Anderson says Rovers have every right to be pleased with the efforts in earning an extension to their season but will not be getting carried away.

He said: “It’s a great achievement and everyone is very happy with it but it’s only the first bit done. We won’t get carried away.

“We’ve done what we’ve needed to do to get in there and it’s back to the training ground to work on Crewe and get ready for it. We’ll get focused and ready for that.”
